Science behind Horti LED Grow Lights
To understand how LED grow lights work and to obtain the maximum growth results you expect we are taking you through all what you need to know, from the basics of horticulture lighting up to the deep details which haven’t been unveiled yet.
Most manufacturers play with micromoles and spectra, we aim at improving your crops and yields. A controlled light environment fitted to your crops and stage of growth will not only improve your crops, it also generates predictability and stable results.
In horticulture lighting we distinguish 3 variations in how light is transferred to the crop.
Supplemental Lighting
To supplement natural daylight and raise grow light levels in order to enhance photosynthesis and thereby improve growth and quality of plants in greenhouses. Ideally the supplementary light is balanced in relation to the light output of the sun at that moment, so the crop gets exactly the light level which results in maximal performance. In many cases greenhouses which use HPS SON-T grow lamps don’t have that luxury and are limited to switching the system on or off. In case of LED grow lights the system can be dimmed down to make the PAR value required, what gives an energy saving in many cases much bigger than just the efficiency gain seen between LED and HPS.
Photoperiodic Lighting
To control the light period by extending the natural day length with artificial light in greenhouses. In this case the artificial light source produces the whole need of spectrum and amplitude the crop needs. A “soft startup” with LED grow lights is often giving positive results from the crops.
Cultivation without daylight
To totally replace daylight with artificial light for ultimate climate control. The two markets seen here are mainly the cultivation of cannabis and the growth of leafy crops in vertical farming applications. But also combinations between greenhouse cultivation and vertical farming sometimes make sense – take for example a greenhouse with potted plants. In the winter time it could make sense to move your plants from top lighting to VF lighting, what would require much less energy to keep the plants in a healthy condition.
